Case Summary

Last Cleaning: June 2005
Case Description
I have learned that gums do not grow back so it is important to take care of them and not brush in them too hard. However, it seems like everytime I go in for a cleaning, the dentist picks and scrapes at the teeth near the gums and when I rinse, it seems like I'm rinsing bits of gum out because I see red pieces. If gums do not grow back, then why do some dentist pick at it so hard? --a daily flosser and brusher

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Some people produce alot of tenacious calculus (or tartar), that's the hard buildup around the gum line and between the teeth. We especially see this on the lower front teeth. It takes alot of effort of the dentist or hygenist with a sharp instument called a scaler to clean the teeth. Sometimes the dentist or the hygenist uses a sonic or ultra sonic machine to vibrate the calculus away. As for the "pieces of gums" you see in the rinsing sink, its most likely clotted blood or blood coated pieces of calculus. It seems your health care provider is trying to do his/her very best for you.
