By: Patient Email Withheld, Nottingham, MD
Need Dentist / Specialist: No
Provide Cost Estimate: Yes
X-rays Available: No
Case Summary

Teeth: 14
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: unsure
Last Cleaning: 6 months ago
Case Description
I have a permanent crown which just fell off. I rinsed my mouth with warm water and also the crown itself. It seemed like it has "snapped" back in place. Is there any further need to have it cemented back re infection or can I just let it stay like this?

Thanks for your reply.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

You are fortunate that you were given a warning that something is wrong under your crown. But your problem is not yet solved. If you are truly lucky, then once your dentist examines the tooth, he will merely have to clean out the old cement and recement the crown. I am not sure what it costs in your area but I imagine that it will run you about $150 including any exam and x-ray fee. If you are marginally lucky, you will need a new crown at about $1000. And if it is just not yet the year you had hoped for, you could need a root canal or worse.

Even though the crown snapped in place, there exists a gap between the crown and the tooth which will harbor lots of bacteria which will eventually infect the tooth. You still have a loose crown. If the crown suddenly dislodges while you are eating or speaking, you could choke on it . Think about this: It is about the size and weight of a marble. . I hope you are not sleeping with it.

If you wait too long, '06 is sure to get worse. -Darrell Pruitt DDS
